"First trimester is hard. You might be exhausted, nauseous, or just overwhelmed by the size of what's happening. This is not the time for a complicated lace shawl. These are the patterns I reach for when I need my hands busy but my brain can't commit to anything. They finish fast, they work in any color, and if you make ten of them imperfectly, you'll have mastered the techniques anyway โ because they're that quick to restart."

Top Knot Hat & Baby Socks
A hat and a pair of socks in one pattern โ both perfectly sized for a newborn and both fast enough to make multiples. The top knot detail on the hat is sweet without being fussy. The socks feature a classic heel turn, which makes this the ideal first sock project: it teaches you the actual structure of how socks work, and because each one knits up so quickly, if your first attempt goes sideways you can cast on again and get it right before you've lost momentum. By your third pair you'll understand sock construction properly โ and you'll have a drawer full of tiny socks to show for it.
I used Hawthorn Fingering the first time โ great stitch definition but not as soft as I wanted against newborn skin. Use Stroll instead. Same beautiful definition, much softer. You won't regret it.

Heart Baby Cloth
Don't let the word "dishcloth" fool you โ these are what I use as burp cloths, and they're one of the most useful things you can make before baby arrives. Knit in cotton, they're soft, absorbent, and machine washable. The heart motif is subtle enough to work before you know the gender. But the real reason to make these in the first trimester is this: you might be too sick, too exhausted, or too anxious to commit to anything bigger. That's okay. The meditative, repetitive nature of a simple knit-purl pattern is exactly what first trimester sometimes needs โ something your hands can do while your brain quietly adjusts to everything that's changing.
Make at least six. You will use every single one. They also make a genuinely sweet and useful baby shower gift โ stack a few with a ribbon and no one needs to know how fast they knit up.
